HELLO and welcome to this exciting and informative soccer website www.WorldofSoccer.co.za.

This conception is to principally add value to the beautiful game in South Africa, Africa and the world at large. It will also examine today’s global soccer within the context of under-age players from Africa who trek to Europe in search of fame and money, only to be disappointed as the majority end up becoming bench warmers. Sad cases of few powerful officials exploiting players and players’ agents milking the game dry would be scrutinized.

On a more positive note though, an abundance of astute African players’ skills, flair and the inherent team-work associated with all great soccer nations, coupled with soccer’s often immense and yet fanatical fan-base would also be celebrated.

After all what is soccer without supporters? Zilch! Soccer’s greatest appeal is about unpredictability and suspense, prior and after matches and it ought to be encouraged to keep the intense debate about soccer flourishing.

My soccer experience dating back to 1978 shows one simple truth; thus going to the top sometimes could be a smooth sailing but rather the sustainability at the top remains a huge challenge .Ghana beat Uganda 2-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations finals in ‘78 to capture the trophy for a record third time to keep the trophy for keeps. One player stood out; the golden goal from the golden-boy, Abdul Razak, whose artistry earned him great raves. Years of extensive coverage on African soccer has given me huge insight. Undoubtedly, Ghana was the team of the 60’s and 70’s. Egypt dominated in the 80’s and Nigeria took the baton in the 90’s with Cameroon. South Africa showed glimpses of their potential in the late 90’s and Senegal dazzled the world in 2002 with Ghana rediscovering their old magic – that made them the Black Stars of Africa - in 2006.

I will do my best to inform, educate and entertain soccer fans throughout the globe. Fans on the continent will be provided with well research articles and quality analysis to help broaden their understanding of the beautiful game and in particular ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup to be held in South Africa. The spirit of Ubuntu, friendship, warmth and generosity – Africa’s strongest gifts to the world – will be promoted among all human race.

Soccer is not only a great event on this vast continent, it’s also a vehicle for the promotion of the African Renaissance, an initiative by visionary South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki that sees more and more Africans unite in making sure that this continent – often described by western people as basket-case, third world and backwardness – plays a significant role in today's world.

Ahead of the historic 2010 Soccer World Cup fiesta to be held in South Africa and on African soil for the first time since football’s world governing body, FIFA 100 years in existence, these are indeed interesting times. I will provide an incisive and honest perspective on developments leading up to the event.
Different styles of writing – investigative reporting, transfer news, editorial comments on topical issues affecting the game on a weekly basis, player profiles, previews and reviews, results and latest news on African soccer will all be featured prominently.

Abedi Pele

Shaun Bartlett

Accusations are being leveled against foreign-based soccer players of African origins for not wanting to represent their countries in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers as well as the final of the event itself in every two years – and yet the continent’s football controlling body, Caf’s silence is deafening.
